My Favorite Drawer

By Mary Flagstad

My favorite drawer is mom’s jewelry drawer. It is in the bathroom on the very last row. When I open it, I feel like I’m opening a treasure chest full of precious stones.

I feel so excited and overwhelmed when I first lay eyes on everything inside, that I don’t know what to look at first.

As I pick up my mother’s golden chain with a big purple gem, I inhale an old scent of gold and rust. The gem almost seems to stare at me, as it gently rocks back and forth like a pendulum.

I love my mom’s charm bracelet. It feels so cool and smooth, like only silver jewelry can. My mom is the only person I know that has a doorknocker on her bracelet. This is my favorite charm. It’s shinier than the rest and dances about on my mom’s wrist.

I slowly pick things up, trying my best not to move anything glass. If I broke anything, my mom would be really mad and I wouldn’t be able to explore her jewelry box anymore. Phew! That was close! I almost knocked over a flower shaped perfume bottle.

Aha! I found it! My absolute favorite pin! It’s a little gold bee about the size of an eraser. The wings have a smooth layer of emerald-green paint, and there are sapphire blue flowers on top. The gold is tarnishing a bit, but a spring makes the wings move up and down really fast, like a real bee would.

I know there is magic in her jewelry box, because each pin, necklace, and bracelet has a history of how it got there. I can tell you there is magic in my mom’s jewelry drawer, because when I open it all the magic creeps out and tells its story.

Now you know why I love my mother’s jewelry drawer. As I close it, I wonder what I’ll find next time.
