Waves

By Kalí Kamaria Lowe-Brisby

I watch
the blanket of darkness cover the sky,
as the last few moments of day
set off a splendid performance of rainbow lights
in the darkening
sky.

I close my eyes,
and listen to the sound of waves
crashing
like shattering glass
on the razor sharp
rocks.

The warm salty water
races up and
drenches my feet in the crystal clear
water.

Suddenly,
before I know it,
I'm leaping into the dark
abyss.

With a splash,
I feel
the cool water overcoming
my body.

I start
to paddle out towards the sun.
I push myself up on my board as
I ride off into the sunset.
I turn around waiting for
the right moment.
I start to pick up speed;
quickly I jump up and
feel my heart start to beat faster, and
faster.

Slowly,
I start to ride in,
getting closer and closer to
shore.

After a minute or two,
I can see the fish and
the rocks beneath me.
Slowly,
as I reach the sand,
I get off and
go home to
look forward to
another day of fun in the
water.
