In Cultural Arts Department we study about the different cultures our focus holiday comes from. We research, and choose an art project to reproduce. We learn about folk arts and why those arts are important to the holiday.
Here are some of the things we researched about and then made:
For Divali we decorated our room with an Indian mural that we painted and made clay bowls for lanterns to light during th Festival of Lights.
For Las Posadas we made a ritablo and also pinata that we filled with candy for our presentation day.
On Chinese New Year we learned about dragons and made a large dragon mural for our class.
During Salamatan researched Indonesian fabric printing and made batik wall hangings.
At Odalan Festival,
we made traditional Indonesian hanging decorations. Usually, they are made out
of palm leaves, but we used paper. We also made little books which showed pictures
of the Ramayana, The books are usually on bamboo sticks, but we put the miniture
pictures on cardboard. It took a long time to make them.
At Japanese
Children's Day
we made paper dolls and then we made some beautiful cloth dolls wearing Japanese
kimonos.
Memorial
day
was fun because we learned about the flag and made a flag for our classroom.
During Junteenth Departments
we studied about quilting and made some quilts using traditional patterns. We
also started some story quilts.
