Community Service/Stewards of Nature Department
The Community Service department focuses on service learning and gets the children involve in activities to benefit the community. The students, enrolled in grades three through six, have: worked with toddlers from St. Vincent De Paul to create art projects, raised money to help fund a school in Tijuana- Colegio Esperanza, Projects of America's Foundation, engaged in art activities with senior citizens at St. Paul's Manor, organized canned food drives, and participated in the Empty Bowls project. As a result, the students learn about a variety of ways they can contribute to their community, share their talents and energy with others in the neighborhood, and raise awareness of important issues, like world hunger, a curable condition! Every student makes at least two or three bowls, and graciously donates their artwork for the Empty Bowls fundraiser. All the bowls are handmade by children and fired with lead-free glazes.

Empty Bowls Project
As an exploration of the Community Service Department, the Museum School began working on the Empty Bowls Project in the fall of 2002, under the direction of art teacher-Branan Freeman, and Holly Evans. The basic idea for the Empty Bowls Project is simple. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal in the bowl. Guest choose a bowl to use that day at the fundraiser and to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, a guest gives a minimum donation of $12.00. The Museum School children raise this money to donate to an organization that fights hunger. We hope that our guests realize that by participating in our Empty Bowls fundraiser, they make a difference in the fight against world hunger.
